The scars that make us beautiful!
I know about accidents. I have seen
accidents. The fatal ones, the tear-guts and all likes; I once had an accident,
but none of these accidents have made impact on me like the ones that left
horrible scars. The aftermath, the
recuperation, the denial, the resignation, all form the visible and invisible
scars that mar our beauty. I know of scars
that never heal, I know of scars that heal faster than the “scarer”, and I also
know of scars that heal completely without medication.
Everyone has a scar.
Everyone carries scar.
Everyone deals with their scars differently.
Tell me what I dont know; that the scars left
by a pain can be easily forgotten? One thing I know is “it is dangerous to
abandon one’s self to the luxury of grief: It deprives one of courage and even
of the wish for recovery”.
Eryca Freemantle had no idea of what destiny
or the over 200 scars that mar her face will do to her life, after her near
death accident. At that time physicians, psychologist, parents, friends, colleagues,
all saw a scarred face and body that is not acceptable in the modelling
profession. She saw the like at first until she learnt to fight the horrors of
the scars that would have tarnished her beauty. Left with loss of hair, a near amputation of
her left leg, undergone five fibroid operations, with a 3 years agonizing and
resented solitude, after being told she will never walk again, and worst of all
over 200 scars to her face.
With sheer
deetrmination, she was motivated to learn
about corrective make-up techniques and applications to camouflage facial
blemishes and scarring. Accepting she could not pursue modelling, she decided
to become a make-up artist. Her story is an amazing and inspirational one. Her
positive attitude towards life encouraged her determination to proceed and be
successful. It was her motivation that gave her the courage to embrace her
beauty at a time of such low self-esteem. She had to make and design her own
make-up, to disguise her scarred face because of the inavailability of makeup
in the UK for black women, much less black women with imperfections. So she got
some mud from the garden, mixed it with water and put it on her face. That was
her first ever experience with makeup. It didn’t look good, but it made her
feel better because it covered the scars for a little while.
To so many people,
courage in the face of disaster is a no good, yet this inspiring woman used
the powder of hope to smoothen the imperfection of her scars. She understood how
to deal with the roots of her scars and ultimately learnt to use her tweezers
of elegance to pluck free the inner scars that may be more visible that the outer
scars. Her self realization mirrored the knowledge that guided her perfections
of her scars, she knew without doubts that once she couldn’t feel it, then she
wouldn’t see it and yes, we wouldn’t see it.
Today, Eryca is an
acclaimed make-up artist and industry expert. She has researched the make-up
artist industry intensely, travelled the globe, looking at trends and
predictions. Through her research she was able to identify that she had
something unique and very much in demand to offer, slightly more than the
average make up artist. She has specialist industry knowledge combined with
traumatic experiences, which is why she is known as a “survivor.” She is an
award-winning celebrity and international make-up artist, industry
intelligence, consultant, educator, author, corrective make-up specialist,

Her life is a lesson for those whose palms still hold lines they can trace; if you hold out on the invitation to create your own beauty techniques in covering your scars, chances are that you will miss the compliments of life and the success story. A little dab of your astringent may not be enough, the discovery of your foundation may seems futile, but you can learn to loose yourself in the beauty of your powder, and let the right application of all corrective measures give you the best chances at covering your scars.

Who knows about your scars, who sees your
fears, who hears the near trembling voice everytime you approach the podium,
who wants a list of your past failures, who cares about your limitations. No
one decides if you get the seat at the high table. Don’t let anyone play dragon
with your scars, cover them the best you could and be the best you can. Our scars are not the ones the world see,
they are not the ones we know, but the ones we acknowledge. The visibility is
not the problem, but the acceptance is the disease.
This is not to say we must indulge in
corrective measures to cover a fool’s dungeon but to solve the inner impediments
that are causing the outside breakouts.
It’s hard. It’s near impossible. It’s
overwhelming.
But
you need your own “awesomeness”. Most times we have the solutions in our hands,
but we throw away the mantle of our own success because we are scarred, we have
been scarred or because of some scars.
Eryca Freemantle says "every
woman has the right to simple make-up and fitness regime that enhances her
natural beauty. All women are beautiful."
I know that everyone has a scar.
Everyone carries scar.
You need a technique to work
out your scars, believe me.
Salute to this wonderful and
courageous woman, Eryca Freemantle, as she joins our list of the “SASSY, SMART
and SUCCESSFUL”.
It’s indeed an honour to
write and share her story with you.
Remember...Believe...Knowledge...Opportunities
